South Island

A breathtakingly wild and remote world

This is where you’ll find some of New Zealand’s most dramatic and untouched landscapes. Along the narrow West Coast, squeezed between the rugged Tasman Sea and the towering Southern Alps, small towns and remote settlements are scattered among an ever-changing landscape. The journey takes us from wild coastline and ancient rainforest into the heart of the mountains, where snow-capped peaks and glaciers dominate the horizon.

The road to Milford Sound is an experience in itself. On a rainy day, the landscape becomes even more spectacular as countless waterfalls suddenly appear, cascading down the sheer mountainsides. It is one of those moments when nature makes you realise just how small we are.

Walking through the glacier country brings us even closer to this untamed landscape. In winter, if we are lucky, we may even hear the distant rumble of avalanches echoing through the mountains. And when it’s time for a little more life and energy, Queenstown offers a welcome change of pace. Nestled among the mountains, it feels almost like a little piece of Europe — with elegant restaurants, lively bars, cafés and plenty of adventure for those looking to add a little adrenaline to their journey.

And the list is nowhere near complete. The South Island is full of extraordinary landscapes and experiences waiting to be discovered and lived — from remote valleys and hidden beaches to alpine trails, wild rivers, quiet lakes and encounters with wildlife.
